Some see them as the epitome of environmental waste and unnecessary packaging, others hail them as the ultimate wintertime gift and ultimate segue into the Christmas holiday—despite some kits receiving backlash, the industry is still merrily making advent calendars, conjuring a pre-holiday frenzy for the big boxes with little doors.

For retailers, it’s the chance to spotlight their bestselling and most hype-worthy brand assortments, with the added benefit of in-store treatment vouchers for those with a physical presence. As a follow-up to last year’s inaugural post, here are BeautyMatter’s picks of the season, with more undoubtedly on the way.

BeautySpaceNK

Since announcing its prestige retailer crossover in March, Walmart has been bringing the best of prestige UK beauty stateside courtesy of Space NK, with the BeautySpaceNK activation. To celebrate the pairing, the companies have launched an advent calendar, with a 17,000-strong rollout (at a $59 price tag with a $135 value). A festively striped creation, the box contains 12 products, ranging from Lancer The Method Polish to BeautySpaceNK Hand Cream Jasmine and Rose. Items include cult classics like Mario Badescu Facial Spray and one-off treatments like Patchology Get Dewy With It Sheet Mask, all in travel-friendly formats.

Cult Beauty

Priced at £235 ($260) with an over £1,000 ($1,109) value, Cult Beauty’s entree is an abstractly illustrated chest of wonders. This year’s rendition is  20% bigger in size than last year’s offerings, containing 37 products in total (17 full-sized). There will also be a Golden Ticket tucked away inside three advent calendars, offering £1,000 to spend on Cult Beauty for the lucky winners. The retailer is donating more than £75,000 ($83,207) from the sales to Mental Health UK and planting one tree for every unit sold, in partnership with (more:trees).

Fortnum & Mason

As a department store known for its luxurious gifting ideas, the British retailer brought its own classical luxury presentation to the advent calendar table. For £245 ($271), consumers can get £800 ($887) worth of products. This one contains 22 full-sized products, two deluxe samples, and three travel-sized miniatures. Think Escentric Molecules Molecule 01, Aromatherapy Associates Bath & Shower Oil, Acqua di Parma Colonia Body Lotion, and Sol de Janeiro Brazilian Bum Bum Cream. As for the color of the container? The F&M trademark turquoise, naturally.

Harvey Nichols

The longstanding British department store (founded in 1831) is tempting holiday shoppers with an advertised product value of over £1,200 ($1,369), priced at £250 ($285). The kit contains not only full-size and trial products from luxury brands like Maison Francis Kurkdjian and La Mer (34 different products in total), but also treatment vouchers for in-store use.

Liberty

As a retailer celebrated for its prints and Tudor-style storefront, it only made sense to have these reflected in its advent calendar stylings—in a snow-covered and peacock-feathered rendition of course. It retails for £245 ($271), but is worth £1,065 ($1,181). With a general edit and a men’s-focused rendition set for launch, customers can expect products such as Sunday Riley Autocorrect Eye Cream, Surratt Lipslique, Uoma Beauty Salute To The Sun Drama Bomb Mascara, and Vilhelm Parfumerie Peony Couture for the former, while the latter will house Pasta & Love Pre-Shaving & Beard Oil, Editions de Parfum Frederic Malle French Lover, and Malin+Goetz Bergamot Hand + Boy Wash. The advent calendar is the best-selling and fastest-selling product in the company’s 145-year history, so clearly their production won’t be ceasing any time soon.

Revolve Beauty

Retailing for $150 with a value of $592, Revolve Beauty’s advent calendar offering is a bold red mini suitcase with 24 of the retailer’s bestsellers, from gua sha tools to scented candles, clean to cult beauty brands. Products include Amika Soulfood Nourishing Mask, Benefit Cosmetics 24-Hour Brow Setter Brow Gel, and ILIA Limitless Lash Mascara.

Selfridges

With the slogan “time to indulge” printed in gold font on the inside of its advent container, Selfridges is certainly setting the tone for the yuletide season to come. Featuring 12 full-size products, the scarlet box is filled with bestsellers across fragrance, skincare, and cosmetics, such as Westman Atelier Lit Highlight, Pat McGrath Divine Rose Blush, Augustinus Bader Rich Cream, and Le Labo Another 13. The kit is priced at £210 ($232) and worth over £800 ($887).

Space NK

An eye-catching metallic red-and-pink design, Space NK’s rendition contains 31 beauty products, from the celebrity-launched JVN Complete Air Dry Cream to offerings by sunscreen newcomer brand Ultra Violette. The kit retails for £215 ($238) and is valued at £770 ($854). Ranging from makeup and body care to face treatments, it’s the complete assortment of everyday products, handpicked with the Space NK eye for brand detail in mind.

Ulta Beauty

The beauty retailer offers not one but three sets containing its namesake collection, all themed around the 12 days of Christmas: 12 Days of Beauty, 12 Days of Bath, and 12 Days of Nail—all priced at $22. The first two kits have a $75 value, while the nail set contains $70 worth of products. The beauty set is inspired by the zodiac, bearing starry illustrations, containing products for eyes, lips and face; the bath kit contains products for hands, feet, lips, and body, scented with Glistening Snow, a fruity gourmand scent with notes of passionfruit, peach, and vanilla; and the nail collection contains nail art decals in moon and star shapes, as well as berry-, navy-, and glitter-hued polish.
